Maritime – We, The Vehicles
A lot of people hear the words indie-rock and are immediately turned off and never again give a band a chance…but I’m posting this to let people know that not every “indie-rock” band is the same. Not every one has a name that starts with “THE” and they don’t all have the same sounding songs with the same style, image, and beat.
Let me introduce you to a band called Maritime. They are the remaining pieces of two bands, one being the Dismemberment Plan (a band I wasn’t completely into, but greatly respected). I’ll admit that I have yet to listen to Maritime’s first release, “Glass Floor”, but their 2006 release “We, The Vehicles” is easily one of my favorites for the the year. First, the cover pulled me in, just a bunch of faces of all different colors and shapes…it made me feel like this was an album that was very eclectic and diverse even before listening. It also gave me the impression that the songwriters really thought about what the music inside the plastic and paper was saying, I’ll leave that interpretation to you however.
The music, it speaks for itself. It’s catchy indie-rock based pop. That’s alot of cliche’s and labels to attach to one record, but to me that’s the point, it’s all of them all at once. Some may be turned off by the singers vocals but I’m not sure why I’ve heard that, as to me he has an excellent sound and delivery, unlike your typical “indie-rock” singers…yes I just lumped them all together, I promise I won’t do it again. I wish I could point out a few key tracks for new listeners but the truth is I really enjoy the entire record, something that while some people take lightly, I treasure.
Finally, the biggest factor of enjoyability when it comes to this record, in my opinion, is that it’s not a downer…it’s not all depressing and sad. Instead I get this feeling of hope when listening to it, something missing from so much of today’s music.

The first time i heard this, it didn’t even cross my mind that anyone from D-plan was involved. I was wowed though, this is really good.
