Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s

Who is Margot and what is a nuclear so so?  What is up with the kitty? Come again!?  All understandable of course, I mean it isn’t every day that such a name easily rolls from your tongue and lips.  However, with a name like that a lot of assumptions are tagged very quickly.  Yes, the name is a little outrageous and even quite annoying, but so what, it’s not about a name, it’s about the music.  It’s all about the music.  However, when we look at the music we find another item that sets this group up for dissection and perhaps failure amongst the ears of casual fans and even critics.  They have a large band…8 members…vocals, guitars, drums, trumpets, cello, percussion, keys, and bass…with a lineup like that it’s either kill or be killed.  With a lineup like that you’re either setting yourself for something amazing or for a jumbled up mess……

Thankfully for us, and for the band, the have pulled it off and done so brilliantly.  Despite the crazy band name, despite the large lineup of bandmates, and even some weird song names…this band has created an amazing album titled “The Dust of Retreat“.  The album is full of melodic wonderfulness, mixed with an orchestral sound and even hints of atmospheric sounds, all the while adding a touch of indie-rock-pop music with lyrics that have the ability to stun; “Your mother is a vampire, she sucked your old-man’s life away”, “Just cover your neck, cuz your life is full of regrets”.

I wish I had the ability to key in all the ways this album has hit me, all the ways this band has crafted an amazing piece of music…but alas I can not…but it only took the opening moments of the album to make me realize I would be engulfed by it for days and days…it’s now been weeks….I guess I was wrong.

hey!..this review sounds great..just added them on myspace. Remind me a little of Anathallo. Great find!

  2. This album has consistently been my favorite for 2006 all year long. I saw them play live at the Black Cat in Washington D.C. last tuesday, with only about a hundred people attending, and they just blew me away. They also played a few live tracks off their upcoming album called “Animal!” I’ve passed this album around to at least a dozen people, and almost all of them were hooked.

    Cheers

These guys should be getting national exposure. They are much better than the crap being peddled.

I just caught them as luck had it, last night in Phoenix, AZ on Thanksgiving vacation down here. They were awesome live! I gotta give props out you guys again. I told them about this review too. And I guess one of their songs, “A Light On a Hill” was used in the closing credits for the FOX TV Show “Bones” a few weeks ago.

Thanks again!..the Traversing folks need to hear more about these guys!
